Welcome to Manyara Park

Introduction:

Lake Manyara National Park is a picturesque gem located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Though smaller in size compared to other Tanzanian parks, it is incredibly diverse and offers a rich tapestry of ecosystems, from groundwater forests and open grasslands to acacia woodlands and the expansive, alkaline Lake Manyara itself. The park is a sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife and is renowned for its stunning scenery.

Key Attractions:

Groundwater Forests: The park features dense groundwater forests, fed by springs and streams that flow from the escarpment. This lush area is home to a variety of wildlife and provides a cool, shaded environment, a contrast to the more arid regions of Tanzania.

Tree-Climbing Lions: Lake Manyara is famous for its unique population of lions that often lounge in the branches of acacia trees, a behavior rarely seen in other parts of Africa. These tree-climbing lions are one of the park’s main attractions.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise: The park is a haven for bird enthusiasts, boasting over 400 species. The shallow alkaline lake attracts large flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and other waterbirds, creating a vibrant display of pink along the lake’s edge.

Diverse Wildlife: Despite its relatively small size, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, buffaloes, and a healthy population of primates such as baboons and blue monkeys.

Activities:

  • Game Drives: Explore the park’s diverse habitats on guided game drives, where you can spot wildlife in their natural environment.
  • Bird Watching: With such a vast array of bird species, Lake Manyara is ideal for birdwatching. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to see the most bird activity.
  • Canoeing (seasonal): When water levels are high enough, canoeing on Lake Manyara offers a unique perspective of the park and its wildlife.
  • Nature Walks: Some parts of the park offer walking safaris, allowing visitors to explore the bush on foot with a guide, providing an intimate experience of the park’s flora and fauna.
  • Cultural Visits: Visit nearby villages to learn about the local culture and traditions of the indigenous people, such as the Maasai.

Best Time to Visit:

Lake Manyara National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry season (June to October) is generally the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals are more easily spotted in the sparse vegetation. The wet season (November to May) is ideal for birdwatching, with migratory species present and the landscape lush and green.

Accessibility:

The park is easily accessible from Arusha, about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive (approximately 126 km / 78 miles). It is often included as a part of the Northern Circuit safari route, along with other parks like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
